‘Absolutely terrifying’: Bay Area Ukranians and supporters denounce Russian invasion at San Francisco rally

As Russian forces ongoing to advance in Ukraine, hundreds of Ukrainians residing in the Bay Region and their supporters collected Thursday night outdoors San Francisco Metropolis Hall to denounce the invasion and what some mentioned they feared could become a full-scale war in Europe.

In a sea of blue and yellow, demonstrators waved Ukrainian flags, donned Ukrainian jerseys and held symptoms with a slew of slogans like “stop Russian bloodshed in Ukraine,” “Russia is an occupant” and “Pray for Ukraine.”

Vitalii Burak’s handmade sign utilised a portmanteau of Russian President Vladimir V. Putin and Adolf Hitler, reading through “Putler, fingers off Ukraine.” His concept was one of several that compared Russia’s chief to the dictator of Nazi Germany.

“A good friend of mine who is there, a missile shot correct into his developing,” he explained, introducing that his good friend despatched him shots of blood spilled in his stairway. “It’s just a city — not a army item. It is just peaceful folks who are sleeping in their beds and then the following matter they know, a missile is shot.”

Dmytro Nedzelskyi, 35, relocated from Ukraine to San Francisco three yrs ago for function. He said he felt helpless for his household again house and his brothers who are in the military services and stationed at the country’s border.

Nedzelskyi reported he felt inclined to show up at the protest to advocate for the U.S. and Europe to equip Ukrainians with weapons to defend them selves towards the potent Russian armed forces.

“We’re not asking for any individual to appear and conserve us,” he said. “We can conserve ourselves but we have to have some weapons that we can use since they have additional impressive weapons.”

At Thursday’s demonstration, Ukrainians ended up joined by other Bay Location inhabitants from a wide range of write-up-Soviet republics, which includes Ga, Armenia and Kazakhstan. Previous residents of Russia and Belarus, which confronted sanctions Thursday for allowing Russian armed forces to use its territory all through the invasion, also joined the rally in support of Ukraine.
