Avocado, bread, and even tomatoes: all foods that should not be kept in the refrigerator
Storing food in the refrigerator is a normal, convenient thing, and even helps the freshness of the food and prevents it from rotting. However, there are foods that you should avoid storing in the refrigerator because they may spoil or their taste and texture may change. Thus, according to experts in matters of nutrition and health.
So which foods should not be kept in the refrigerator?
bananas
The refrigerator temperature is not suitable for bananas. The cold temperatures break down the cell walls of the banana skins, browning them quickly and increasing the rate of ripening, and no one likes an overripe banana.
Tomatoes
In order not to disrupt the ripening process of the tomatoes and change their taste and texture, you should avoid keeping them in the refrigerator.
bread
Most of us tend to store our bread in the fridge, however – this is not ideal. Low temperatures can cause it to dry out and age at a faster rate. Alternatively, it can be kept in a cool, dark place. If you have a lot of bread, store it in the freezer and thaw it when needed.
honey
You should avoid storing honey in refrigerators, because it can crystallize in cold temperatures. The honey should be kept at room temperature.
Potatoes
You should avoid refrigerating potatoes because they may break down the starch present in them, which will change their taste.
Avocado
Avoid storing avocados in the refrigerator, as it may slow down the ripening process and harden the texture of the fruit. You can keep it outside the refrigerator and enjoy the taste and texture of the fruit.
cooking oil
Storing cooking oil such as coconut oil, olive oil, vegetable oil and more in the refrigerator is not recommended. The cold temperature can cause it to thicken and harden, making it unsuitable for cooking. Instead, store it in a cool, dark place to prolong use.
Onion
Onions are with us all year round, and their life can last a long time – as long as we store them correctly, and not in the refrigerator. The humidity of the refrigerator will affect the texture of the onion and rot it. Onions should be stored in cool and dark places, and avoid keeping them near potatoes. This is because the onion will spoil within a few weeks if kept in a closed area due to the gases emitted by the potatoes.
coffee
Another product that is not recommended to keep in the refrigerator is coffee. The cold can drastically change the taste of the coffee. Coffee should be stored in an airtight container and away from sunlight.
garlic
It is not recommended to store garlic in the refrigerator because it causes germination and shortens its life. It should be kept in a dry and cool place to ensure that it can be used for a longer time without losing its flavor.
nuts
Cool temperatures help prevent the natural oils in the nuts from going rancid. Shelled nuts can also absorb other odors lurking in the refrigerator. It is recommended to store nuts in an airtight container in the pantry.
pastries
The fats in pastries harden at cold temperatures, suppressing flavors and also strengthening the texture. Avoid storing them in the refrigerator.
