CCS, NCS baseball playoffs: Leigh, Bellarmine to meet in a title game

Leigh had won 11 in a row before a late-season slide cost the Longhorns an outright league championship.

The good vibes are back now.

Wednesday, Leigh went to Hartnell College in Salinas and defeated top-seeded Aptos 9-1 in the semifinals of the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs.

The Longhorns advanced to play second-seeded Bellarmine for the championship on Friday at Excite Ballpark in San Jose.

Senior left-hander Colten Hanson was sensational in the semifinals for Leigh, allowing one run and four hits in 6 ⅔ innings.

Dom Panella had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs and Justin Jeong went 3 for 4 and scored two runs for the San Jose school.

The Longhorns also got a hit and two RBIs from Carter Williams as they improved to 19-10.

Leigh scored a run in the first and four in the third. They added a run in the fifth and three in the sixth against an opponent that finished 20-6.

No. 2 Bellarmine 5, No. 6 Serra 2

Bellarmine beat West Catholic Athletic League rival Serra for the third time in four meetings this season, this one at Mission College for a trip to the CCS Division II final.

Wade Mountz allowed two runs in 3 ⅓ innings and Paul Wheeler followed with 3 ⅔ scoreless innings to finish the game.

Chris Rudell had two hits and two RBIs and Nolan Randol doubled twice and scored a run for Bellarmine.

The Bells improved to 19-12-1. Serra finished 16-12.

Division II

No. 6 Maria Carrillo 6, No. 7 Benicia 2

Myles Cooper hit a two-run homer in the fifth for Benicia to give the Panthers a brief lead, but Maria Carrillo answered with two in the home half of the frame as the Santa Rosa school advanced to the Division II championship game Saturday against top-seeded Casa Grande.
