Former UFC star Phil Baroni has been arrested for allegedly murdering his girlfriend in Mexico last weekend, according to authorities.

A woman was found dead in San Fernando on Sunday, the prosecutors’ office in the Pacific coast state of Nayarit said. Mexican outlet Tribuna De La Bahia reported that the woman, identified as Baroni’s girlfriend, was found naked and under a sheet, with bruises and markings all over her face and body.

Baroni reportedly contacted police, telling them he got into a drunken argument with his girlfriend. He claims he told her to take a shower, and when she wouldn’t, he forced her to do so, which led to her hitting her head, per TMZ. Authorities speaking with Baroni noticed his hands were red, and they took pictures.

The former UFC fighter said he eventually helped her out of the tub and wrapped her in a blanket in bed, before heading out to pick up cigarettes and beer. He says when he got back, he assumed she was sleeping.

Baroni was arrested and is currently behind bars. It is unclear if he had legal representation. The Associated Press reported that an initial hearing would be held on Monday.
