Hundreds of homes could replace San Jose shopping center near BART stop
SAN JOSE — A new residential development in San Jose near a BART stop could replace a shopping center with hundreds of homes, plans on file with city officials show.
The housing would replace North Valley Plaza, a small retail center on Berryessa Road between Berryessa Station Way and Lundy Avenue in San Jose, according to the planning documents.
Pan-Cal Corp. subsidiary Pan-Cal Showcase Homes proposed the development.
The project envisions the development of 210 homes, a very preliminary application on file with the city shows. Details weren’t immediately available regarding the type of housing that might be part of the project.
Pan-Cal filed the proposal in a fashion that suggests the developer would use a streamlined approval process for housing under the rules sketched out in SB 330, the planning documents show.
Developers have proposed several housing projects on multiple sites in the vicinity of the Berryessa BART station, which at present is the transit agency’s sole stop in San Jose.
North Valley Plaza shopping center is owned by an affiliate whose mailing address is the same location as Pan-Cal Corp., Santa Clara County property records show.
The development of 210 homes that’s been proposed by Pan-Cal would occur on several parcels, according to city and county documents.
Pan-Cal was founded in 1978 as a developer of custom homes in the Bay Area, according to the company’s website.
The company describes itself as “a full-service real estate organization with expertise in homebuilding, site development, commercial and multi-family asset management, and leasing,” according to a post on the Pan-Cal website.
