John McMullen, standout basketball coach at Santa Monica School, dies at 82

John McMullen, a Hall of Fame neighborhood faculty basketball coach who was an influential figure in Southern California for more than 5 a long time, died Friday in Brentwood. He was 82.

“He touched so lots of lives, gamers and coaches,” Santa Monica Substantial coach James Hecht reported.

McMullen was head mentor at Santa Monica Faculty from 1978 to 2004, compiling a report of 528-240. He was inducted into the California Group College or university Basketball Corridor of Fame in 2005 and was a four-time mentor of the calendar year in the Western State Convention.

Born Sept. 13, 1939, in Topeka, Kan., McMullen moved to the San Fernando Valley as a significant college sophomore. He played basketball at Van Nuys Grant Superior and Cal Point out Northridge. He was head mentor at Camarillo Large, winning a Southern Segment Division 3A championship in 1972.

He would perform at John Wooden‘s camps at UCLA and utilized a suggestion from Wood to turn out to be an assistant coach at Brigham Younger under Frank Arnold ahead of becoming a member of Santa Monica in 1978. Immediately after retiring from Santa Monica, he served as an assistant at New Mexico State beneath his previous assistant Marvin Menzies from 2007 to 2009.

“It’s a large decline,” Menzies explained. “He was an amazing guy and still left a great legacy.”

Hecht explained McMullen welcomed him and aided teach him.

“When I started out coaching 33 several years in the past, I went to a Santa Monica College or university video game, launched myself and from then on he was a mentor,” Hecht reported.

Brian Beauchemin, the previous Glendale College coach, had some quite aggressive game titles as a result of the decades with McMullen and became close friends.

McMullen is survived by his spouse, Cathy, sons Andy and Brian and 5 grandchildren. Funeral preparations are pending.
